The Trust Fund Projects

The Trust Fund projects are a collection of 24 projects from across the globe that explore and implement pathways to sustainable lifestyles. Funded by the Government of Japan and coordinated through the One Planet Network Sustainable Lifestyles and Education Programme (10YFP- SLE) these projects support local teams in identifying and testing context-based solutions and local alternatives to a variety of lifestyle domains.

The Sustainable Lifestyles and Education Programme

The SLE programme is one of six global programmes under the 10 Year Framework of Programmes for Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP, also known as the One Planet Network).

Taking the entry points of habits, behavior, communities and choice frameworks the SLE programme investigates how to adapt and leverage ways of living to promote sustainable consumption and production practices (SDG12).

Today, our global footprint is about one and half time the Earth’s total capacity to provide renewable and non-renewable resources to humanity.

If nothing changes, in 35 years, with an increasing population that could reach 9.6 billion by 2050, we will need almost three planets to sustain our ways of living.

Working with a broad range of actors, from communities to scientists and economists, the SLE Programme explores alternative models to do ‘more and better with less’, solutions to promote resource efficiency, less pollution and waste, together with more quality of life and well-being.

Rethinking the ways we produce, consume and exchange has become crucial to move towards a society where we can all live well within the boundaries of our planet. As cultures and norms are core determinants of our rich and diverse lifestyles, they will need to be considered as we rethink the way societies are organized, resourced, and maintained.

How we work

The SLE programme connects, advises and collaborates with civil society organisations, academic institutions and businesses across the globe in order to pilot and scale up sustainable lifestyle projects. We do this through:

The SLE Multi-Skateholder Advisory Committee (MAC), or expert members- our MAC run a series of global-scale initiatives in close cooperation with a wide variety of stakeholders. For a complete list of our experts and partners, please see here

Through global calls for proposals – the program administered four calls for proposals of projects aimed at fostering sustainable lifestyles based on the unique needs of local societies. 17 of these were funded by the Carbon Tax of the Japanese Government and so required a key focus on creating low-carbon lifestyles. The last set of projects are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022.

Featured Initiative: The Global Search for Sustainable Schools

The Global Search for Sustainable Schools is working with nine countries across the world to transition over 50 schools to sustainability. Nine countries have held national competitions asking students to submit plans for making their schools sustainable. The winning schools have been given grants to implement their ideas, beginning in 2020, with the support of experts from their country and around the world.

Featured Initiative: Envisioning Future Low Carbon Lifestyles

This project identifies opportunities for low-carbon lifestyles and will develop city-level lifestyle scenarios through a combination of quantitative analysis and household participatory process. Split into two phases, phase 1 begins by analyzing and cataloging key interventions to advance sustainable ways of living. The project will look at current policies, instruments, and frameworks that support transitioning to future sustainable lifestyles. Phase 2 will provide an analytical assessment of a collection of sustainable futures lifestyles scenarios.
